GCD,Il Valentino, sketches

Enjoyed the day in GCD. Some amazing buildings, including even an Art Gallery. Must go back there again and see it all. Thanks Martha for the idea.
Must remember not to use pencil on this shiny paper!

GCD

Here's my pic from grand canal dock. Was a nice day and lovely area to draw in. I don't know if this is the back of a house or restaurant but I'd love to live in it!

Meeting this Sunday at 29 March, 1 pm - Il Valentino! Grand Canal Dock.

Ok Il Valentino is our meeting point at the usual time of 1pm Sunday the 29th March sounds very nice looking forward to sketching in comfort : ) Good suggestion Martha.

Dear Ladies and Gentleman!

For this Sunday I would like to suggest a spectacular location in the Docklands. It should be warm and sunny enough for outdoors, however I suggest to meet inside a lovely Italian cafe/bakery Il Valentino which is open until 3pm on Sundays and serves particularly proper coffees.
There are plenty of very sketchable glass-wall buildings, Italian bakery shop, water, construction sites... :)
To get there the nearest train station that you can see on the map is Grand Canal Dock. It is at bottom of Pearse Street towards Ringsend.

Some more sketches from Dunlaoghaire.

Top two are from Stephen

Were these done by Emer? Apologies for the late posting.

Mary's Work

Had an enjoyable day in Dunlaoghaire and also saw the exhibition, but the Blue Chasm Drawing was washed away from the East pier! The sun shone which made up for the chill, and the toasted sambos were lovely in Scotts pub afterwards. Here are my efforts, in spite of the cold!

Dun Laoghaire

Was a cold day in Dun Laoghaire but some of us managed to brave the elements down by the pier while the smarter guys did some sketching in one of the coffee shops. Here's my sketches from the day. If they look a bit shakey its probly from the cold. Did I mention it was cold!

Coraline trailer

So some dude figured out that if you put a bunch of frames side by side on bilboards when a subway passes them at the right speed it will appear "animated". This is so very well done. Enjoy :)

I mentioned that there is a great exhib. starting on Sunday in Dunlaoghaire County Hall, near the Ferry, by The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, (and on for 2 weeks). Someone suggested we go to Dunlaoghaire to sketch, and also see the Exhib. while we are there. Suits me, I love water! Someone elso may come up with another venue, also.
Wed. 18th. Edited to say this is their 131st Annual Exhib! They have been around ! I would like to check out if the painted chasm is still on the East Pier also!

Marys work

I really enjoyed my second outing with the Dublin Shetchers, this time in the print museum. It was so interesting and a little bit sad, that these machines are now no longer in regular use, but, thats progress! I intend to take the tour some day now that my appetite has been whetted! I must say the staff were very kind and looked after us very well and we finished up in the Cafe for coffee and a chat.

Print Museum drawings

For those of you who missed it the print museum was really cool and interesting. Big thanks to the staff as well who were very friendly and informative. We should go again sometime soon. Here's my sketches from the day and some I did along the canal on the way there. looking forward to the next one!

The National Gallery

Here's my complete sketch from the national gallery the other week. There were a couple of folk in the picture I took too, (er, um, in my memory of course - you're not supposed to take photos), so I included them as well.
Here the print museum is free, the 3.50 only counts of you're taking a guided tour.

James you can delete this whenever. Enjoy it lads.

Tom

Edit: Thanks to Mary, who also found out that there is no charge for entry to the Print Museum, but also that they can arrange to have coffee available in the cafe. Plenty of sitting space there also!

Enjoy!!

Aware Harbour to Harbour walk

Hey guys just thought id promote a worthy cause. Its basically a walk for charity (depression).. you only need a tenner to enter and if someones too lazy to join you you can collect some loose change off them! ;) you could do some life sketches along the way/ take some photos. its all flat (and picturesque walk)..theres loos at clontarf and drinks..it took me 3hours 30mins to do the walk and they provide you with a tshirt (you dont have to wear the hat!)..

Take part in the Aware St. Patrick's Day Harbour to Harbour Walk on Tuesday March 17th and raise vital funds for the work of Aware.

Walk from Howth Harbour to Dun Laoghaire Harbour, or from Dun Laoghaire Harbour to Howth Harbour. The walk begins at 10.30am.

Print Museum Sunday 15th March 2pm-4pm

The sketching session will take place at the Print Museum between 2-4pm and we will go for coffee drinks in nearby beggars bush pub. fee for the print museum of euro 3.50 meet 2pm should be a very interesting place to sketch in.

Sunday 15th March

Hi Guys,

Really enjoyed yesterday in the Botanics -would be great to go back there again another Sunday when (if!) the weather turns.

During coffee afterwards, a couple of suggestions were made for next Sunday....

- Stephen suggested the Printers Museum which is open on Sunday and free and would have lots of machinery etc about the history of printing. Not sure what road it's on, but near-ish to Grand Canal Dock (if navigating by pubs, then the Beggars Bush and Slattterys!)

- Paddy's Weekend - I said I would look into it to see if anything it on. On the Sunday, tere is a Family Big Day Out in Merrion Square with performances/workshops/installations/puppets/storytelling/circus etc. It might be super busy though with tonnes of kiddies..... It starts at noon.

Botanic Gardens Sketches

Great to see you all today, really enjoyed the Botanic Gardens - the greenhouses are so amazing, I will definitely be going back again soon. Though, I will bring back up pens - as all of mine died today!! They didn't like the heat as much as I did!

Sarah, was great to have you back with us for the day - look forward to next time!

More works from today

Hope you don't mind me posting the other pics here Tracey. These are from Harry, Sally, Mary , Jessica, Sarah, Ciaran, James and others apologies for forgetting anyone this time - regards James

Greenhouse

Good day again, cheers for organising, cool venue. First time I've been that I can remember without my ma pointing at a big eared child in ill fitting shorts reminding me of a trip when I was so young at the time I couldn't remember.

Galway trip (in April?)

Greetings All!

I have started to put together some details regarding a possible trip to Galway this spring!

We will have 3 weekends in April, so may be we can decide which time suits best for most people:
1) 10(friday)-12(sunday)
2) 17-19
3) 24-26

There are two central hostels that seem best from the reviews.
The one that I suggest is "Sleepzone":
http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Sleepzone-Galway-City/Galway/408
8 Bed Mixed Dorm Ensuite 22 Euro
Alternatively, Kinlay House Hostel for more or less the same price is a good choice as well, it has only one problem: it is a 223-bed hostel and children friendly.
http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Kinlay-House-Hostel-Galway/Galway/401

You are welcome to suggest other hostels you like, however for most of the central hostels noise is mentioned in the reviews (some are hosting tours every day or have a night club in the same building) even though the overall rating is quite good.
There is is more information about hostels on hostelworld and lonelyplanet website:
http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/hotel/?SearchDetails=K!10002!7!-1!563!!!-1!-1!-1!-1!13..!!!57.59.27.4.52!!&PreviousSearchId=-1&TargetHotelId=-1&SubmitDates=False&VAError=-2147483648&IsSubmit=False

Please vote for hostels and dates in the comments :) It is important that we decide as soon as we can because rooms are already getting booked for these dates.
We could book 8-bed or 6-bed room or 2 rooms just for ourselves depending on how many people decide to go.
